iPhone Duo: Specs, Features, Canadian Pricing and Availability

Apple has announced its first foldable iPhone

Apple introduced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. It is the company's first foldable iPhone and uses a book-style design with a 5.4-inch display on the outside and a 7.6-inch folding display on the inside.

The iPhone Duo will be available in Canada from $2,999 CAD. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, October 16, and the phone will be available beginning Friday, October 23.

It sits above the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in price and combines features from an iPhone and a small tablet. The hardware includes Apple's A20 Pro chip, two 48-megapixel rear cameras, Touch ID, Apple Pencil support, two internal batteries and an eSIM-only design.

Canadian pricing by storage capacity

Apple lists the following Canadian prices for an unlocked iPhone Duo:

StorageCanadian price
256GB$2,999
512GB$3,299
1TB$3,899
2TB$4,799

These are Apple's retail prices before applicable provincial or territorial sales tax. Apple also advertises the 256GB version from $124.96 per month for 24 months through its financing option, subject to approval and the applicable financing terms.

The iPhone Duo Case costs $99 in navy blue or sand. The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand costs $179 in navy blue or taupe. Both accessories can be ordered beginning October 16.

Canadian carrier pricing and device financing have not yet been detailed. Apple specifically lists Bell, Freedom and Rogers among carriers that support eSIM, but availability, financing and plan requirements may vary by carrier when pre-orders begin.

How the two displays work

When closed, the iPhone Duo uses its 5.4-inch outer display like a compact iPhone. Apple says it has more than 90 per cent of the screen area of the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro, despite its shorter shape.

Opening the phone reveals a 7.6-inch inner display. It is 50 per cent larger by area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display. Both screens use the same aspect ratio, allowing an app or video to keep the same proportions as it moves between them.

The two OLED displays support ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz, an Always-On mode, HDR, True Tone and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness. The inner screen has a nano-texture finish intended to reduce reflections and make the centre crease less visible. An under-display FaceTime camera remains hidden beneath the inner panel when it is not active.

The phone can be used fully open, closed or partially folded. In a partially folded position, one half can act as a base while the other holds video controls, a FaceTime call or other content. It can also stand on a surface for hands-free photos, video calls and StandBy.

Apple says support for the USB-C Apple Pencil will arrive later in 2026. The Pencil can be used on either screen for notes, sketches and document markup. It is sold separately.

iOS 27 adds foldable-specific features

The iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. Apple has adjusted the Home Screen, Lock Screen, status information, Dynamic Island and app controls for the phone's different orientations.

The larger display also introduces Split View on iPhone. Two apps can run side by side, two windows from the same app can be opened together, and frequently used app pairs can be saved. Apple says its own apps are optimized for the format. Netflix, Zoom and Slack are among the third-party apps already adapted for the folding display.

StandBy works on either display and does not require the phone to be charging. Depending on its position, the iPhone Duo can show a clock, calendar, photos, weather information or widgets while resting on a desk or bedside table.

Siri AI is included as a beta feature. It can use information from messages, email and photos, understand content currently shown on the screen and carry out actions across supported apps. Siri AI is initially rolling out in English, with French support scheduled for October. As with other Apple Intelligence features, availability can vary by language and region.

Cameras and video features

The rear camera system has two 48MP sensors:

  • a 48MP Fusion Main camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization
  • a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera with macro photography

The Main camera can capture 24MP or 48MP images and provides a 2x optical-quality crop. There is no dedicated telephoto camera, so the iPhone Duo does not offer the longer optical zoom range of the iPhone 18 Pro models.

The folding design adds several camera options. Duo Preview lets a person being photographed see the live framing on the outer display. The rear cameras can also be used for higher-resolution selfies while the outer screen serves as the viewfinder. Smart Take uses on-device processing to capture a photo when the people in a scene are posed, and Kid Cue can play an animation on the outer screen to direct a child's attention toward the camera.

For video, the Main camera records Dolby Vision at up to 4K and 120 frames per second. The phone can remain partially folded on a surface while recording, reducing the need for a separate stand in some situations.

There is a 12MP Center Stage camera associated with the outer display and another FaceTime camera under the inner display. Duo FaceTime can show a call on both screens so someone on the other side of the device can join the conversation.

A20 Pro performance and battery life

The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro family as the iPhone 18 Pro. It includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple also uses a vapour chamber to move heat away from the processor during gaming, multitasking and on-device AI work.

Apple has placed one battery in each half of the phone. The company rates the iPhone Duo for:

  • up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
  • up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display
  • up to 24 hours of mixed use when both displays are used equally

Those figures are Apple's controlled test results and are not direct estimates of screen-on time. Cellular signal, display brightness, camera use, gaming and background activity will affect real-world battery life.

With a compatible wired adapter, Apple says the battery can reach 50 per cent in about 20 minutes. A compatible MagSafe or Qi2 charger can reach 50 per cent in about 30 minutes. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging are supported at up to 25W.

Durability, water resistance and repair considerations

The frame and hinge cover use grade 5 titanium. Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer display, Ceramic Shield protects the rear, and the flexible inner display has a scratch-resistant coating over its polymer cover layer. The hinge contains more than 100 components and supports the centre of the inner display when the phone is open.

The iPhone Duo has an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating. An IP rating is based on controlled laboratory testing; it does not make the phone waterproof, and water resistance can decline with wear or damage. The folding display and hinge also introduce moving and flexible parts that are not present on a conventional iPhone.

Apple has not yet posted Canadian AppleCare+ pricing for the iPhone Duo. Buyers comparing total ownership costs may want to include a case, AppleCare+ terms and the cost of screen or hinge service once Apple publishes its repair rates.

eSIM and wireless connectivity in Canada

The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only in every country. It can keep eight or more eSIMs stored and use two eSIMs at the same time, but it cannot accept a physical SIM card.

Most large Canadian carriers support eSIM, although customers using a smaller provider, a corporate account or a travel SIM should confirm compatibility before ordering. Travellers who normally buy physical prepaid SIM cards will need an eSIM option instead.

Wireless hardware includes 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The USB-C port supports DisplayPort video output and USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s.

Who is the iPhone Duo designed for?

The iPhone Duo is aimed at people who want a larger screen without carrying a separate tablet. Its strongest use cases are side-by-side apps, document review, video, gaming, drawing with Apple Pencil and camera work that benefits from the second display.

There are also clear tradeoffs. It is heavier and thicker when closed than a conventional iPhone, lacks the dedicated telephoto camera found on iPhone 18 Pro models, and starts $1,250 above the iPhone 18 Pro's Canadian starting price. The 2TB version reaches $4,799 before tax.

Because this is Apple's first folding iPhone, longer-term information about hinge wear, inner-screen durability and repair costs will only become available after the phone has been in regular use. Buyers who do not need the folding display can obtain the same A20 Pro chip and a broader rear camera system from the iPhone 18 Pro line for less.
