Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3 in Canada: Features, Compatibility and Release

Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag3 adds iPhone support, longer battery life, expanded Compass View and movement alerts. Here is what Canadian buyers should know.

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3 in Canada: Features, Compatibility and Release

Samsung has announced the Galaxy SmartTag3, a smaller item tracker that works with supported Galaxy devices and, for the first time in the SmartTag line, iPhones. It also adds longer battery estimates, faster network updates, an expanded nearby-finding range and new movement notifications.

The SmartTag3 is scheduled to reach Canada later in 2026. Samsung has created a Canadian product page, but it had not announced a Canadian price or an exact release date as of October 1. It will be sold in black and white.

Samsung's range and battery figures come from controlled testing. Walls, nearby electronics, network participation, settings, battery quality and normal usage can all affect the result.

A smaller design than SmartTag2

The SmartTag3 changes from the long, loop-shaped SmartTag2 to a compact square. Samsung says the new model is approximately 35 percent smaller by volume and 33 percent lighter. At 9.15 grams, it is about 4.6 grams lighter than the 13.75-gram SmartTag2.

The tag still has a built-in button, speaker and replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. The button can run a preset SmartThings routine or control a compatible connected device. A double press can make the paired Galaxy phone or tablet ring.

Samsung will offer a Silicone Case with a metal carabiner ring and a Loop Case for attaching the tracker to different objects. These accessories are sold separately. The smaller tag itself does not have the large integrated opening used on SmartTag2, so buyers should account for the cost and attachment method of a case.

How Galaxy SmartTag3 finds an item

The tracker uses several methods depending on distance and phone compatibility.

When it is directly connected over Bluetooth, the SmartThings app can show signal information and make the tag play a sound. Samsung lists a Bluetooth LE range of up to 120 metres in open conditions, although indoor walls and interference reduce practical range.

On compatible Galaxy phones, Compass View can provide distance and directional guidance. The SmartTag3 combines Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding for longer-range guidance with ultra-wideband for more precise locating at close range. Samsung lists Channel Sounding at up to 60 metres and UWB at up to 20 metres under supported conditions.

The quoted distances are not a promise that the tracker will remain connected at those ranges in a home, airport or parking structure. Samsung measured the 60-metre Channel Sounding range with a clear line of sight and no obstacles.

Which Galaxy phones support the expanded Compass View?

Compass View requires a Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 12 or later with either UWB or Bluetooth Channel Sounding support. At launch, Samsung specifically lists the following devices for Bluetooth Channel Sounding:

  • Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
  • Galaxy Z Fold8
  • Galaxy S26 Ultra
  • Galaxy S26+

Samsung says more devices may be supported later. Other Galaxy models with UWB can use supported precision-finding functions, but capabilities and range depend on the phone's hardware. Owners of recent models can also review our Samsung One UI 9 Canadian rollout guide.

A Galaxy device without UWB or Channel Sounding can still use the map, ring and Bluetooth-based finding features. Buyers should not assume that Android 12 alone provides directional finding; the phone also needs compatible radio hardware.

What happens when a tag is far away?

The SmartTag3 does not include its own GPS or cellular connection. When it is outside the owner's Bluetooth range, participating Galaxy devices can detect it and send an encrypted location update through the Galaxy Find Network.

Samsung says more than 900 million Galaxy devices participate worldwide. The usefulness of the network in a specific location depends on whether a participating device passes close enough to the tag, its settings, connectivity and local conditions. Updates may be frequent in a busy Canadian city and less frequent in a remote area.

Samsung says SmartTag3 provides faster Galaxy Find Network updates than its predecessor. That can shorten the wait for a new map location, but it does not turn the tag into a live GPS tracker. Location reports can still be delayed or unavailable.

iPhone compatibility has important limits

SmartTag3 is the first Samsung item tracker to support both Galaxy and iOS devices. An iPhone must run iOS 17 or later and use the SmartThings app. The iPhone user can join as a SmartThings family member, view and share a tag's location, and use supported nearby-finding functions.

The iOS feature set is not the same as the Galaxy feature set. Samsung says Compass View, Ring Phone and Left Behind Alert are unavailable on iOS. This means an iPhone can help a household monitor a shared SmartTag3, but it does not gain every locating and automation function.

SmartTag3 also remains part of the Galaxy Find Network. It does not become an Apple Find My accessory simply because it supports the SmartThings app on iOS. An iPhone running Apple's Find My network does not replace the nearby Galaxy devices that provide off-range location updates.

For an iPhone-only household, an AirTag or another tracker built for Apple's Find My network may provide a more integrated experience. SmartTag3's iPhone support is more useful in a mixed-device family where at least one person uses a Galaxy phone and other members need access to a shared tag.

Location history and movement alerts

SmartThings Find can retain up to seven days of SmartTag3 location history. Older records are deleted automatically. The history can help identify where a bag or set of keys was last detected, but each point reflects a network observation rather than continuous travel recording.

Movement Detection Alert can notify the owner when the disconnected tag is detected moving. It relies on nearby participating Galaxy devices, so a notification can be delayed or may not arrive if no suitable device detects the tag.

Left Behind Alert warns when the owner's phone loses its direct connection with the tracker. Obstacles and radio interference can cause false alerts even when the item is still nearby. Samsung also lists Place Notification as a trial feature for notifying users when a tag enters or leaves a configured area.

These functions are intended to help locate personal belongings. They should not be treated as a substitute for an alarm system, vehicle security device or real-time pet GPS tracker.

Lost Mode works through NFC

If someone finds a tagged item, they can tap an NFC-capable phone against the SmartTag3. Lost Mode can then display a message and contact details registered by the owner. The finder's phone needs NFC reading and an internet connection, but it can use Android or iOS.

Owners must enter the message and contact information in SmartThings before it can appear. Samsung recommends turning Lost Mode off after the item is recovered to limit unnecessary exposure of personal information.

Battery life and replacement

Samsung estimates up to 550 days from the included CR2032 battery under standard use, compared with up to 500 days for SmartTag2. Power Saving Mode extends the estimate to as much as 790 days.

Power Saving Mode keeps basic Bluetooth finding but disables or limits functions including Compass View and some sound settings. It is therefore best understood as a battery-versus-features trade-off rather than a free extension of full operation.

CR2032 batteries are widely available and replaceable by the user. Actual life varies with alert frequency, nearby searches, temperature, settings and the replacement battery manufacturer. A tracker attached to luggage or outdoor equipment should be checked before a trip instead of relying only on the original estimate.

What the IP67 rating covers

The SmartTag3 is rated IP67, the same rating as SmartTag2. Samsung's testing covers dust resistance and immersion in up to one metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. The tag should be rinsed of residue and dried after getting wet.

IP67 does not make it suitable for swimming, salt water or repeated exposure to soapy water. Water resistance can also decrease with age and damage. A case or attachment should be inspected regularly, particularly if the tag is used on a pet collar or an item handled by a child.

The largest changes are iPhone access, the smaller shape, expanded Compass View and movement alerts. SmartTag2 owners who only need map location, ringing and UWB finding may not need to replace existing tags immediately. The new model is more relevant for mixed Galaxy-and-iPhone households or for objects where the reduced weight is useful.

Canadian price and release date

Samsung says Galaxy SmartTag3 will be available in Canada later in 2026 after its October 7 launch in South Korea. The Canadian product page currently labels it not for sale and does not show a price.

For reference, SmartTag2 launched in Canada at $39.99 for one or $139.99 for a four-pack in 2023. That does not establish the SmartTag3 price. Canadian pricing, bundles, accessories and the exact retail date should be confirmed when Samsung opens orders.
