Canadian price and availability
Apple TV 4K costs $429 in Canada and is sold in one 128GB configuration. It can be pre-ordered now, with store availability scheduled for Friday, November 13. Provincial sales tax, subscriptions and optional AppleCare coverage are separate.
The price is high compared with basic streaming sticks and boxes. Apple TV 4K is positioned as a broader Apple home device rather than only a way to open Netflix or another streaming app. Its additional functions include Apple Arcade games, Fitness+ workouts, FaceTime through an iPhone camera, photo viewing, HomeKit automation and Thread smart-home connectivity.
A19 performance and AV1 decoding
The fourth-generation model replaces the preceding Apple TV processor with the A19 chip. Apple says CPU performance is up to 50 percent faster and graphics performance is up to twice as fast as the previous generation. Those figures are based on Apple's tests and do not mean every app or menu will become exactly 50 percent faster.
The additional processing power is intended to improve navigation, animations, games and Apple Intelligence functions. Apple TV games still vary widely in controller support and graphics demands, so the box should not be treated as a direct replacement for a current game console.
A dedicated AV1 decoder is also built into the A19. AV1 is a modern video-compression format used by some streaming platforms. Hardware decoding can deliver comparable picture quality at a lower bitrate than older formats, although the bandwidth used in practice depends on the service, resolution, network conditions and its chosen encode.
The device supports AV1, HEVC, H.264 and VP9. Output is limited to 4K at 60 frames per second. HDMI Quick Media Switching can reduce black screens when compatible equipment changes between frame rates.
Siri AI on Apple TV
Siri AI appears as a full-screen search and discovery interface in tvOS 27.2. Users can ask conversational questions about films and shows, refine a request with follow-up questions or ask for contextual information while something is playing.
General examples include finding award-winning programs, asking where a production was filmed or checking whether a title is suitable for a particular age. Responses shown during playback use a smaller overlay so they do not cover the entire picture.
Personal-context requests require the owner of the Apple home to have an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad running current software. Siri AI must be enabled and set to a supported language. This can allow a request such as finding a program that someone recommended in a message, depending on permissions and available app data.
Siri AI is a beta feature and some server-based Apple Intelligence functions have usage limits. It is available in English in Canada at launch. Apple also makes Siri AI available to the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer models, so this software feature alone does not require buying the fourth-generation box. Our guides explain which iPhones support Apple Intelligence and what Apple's new Siri AI does.
Hands-free microphones and privacy
Three far-field microphones are built into the Apple TV 4K box. They let a person say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” without holding the remote. Echo cancellation is designed to separate speech from audio playing through the television or speakers.
Hands-free support varies by language and region. Apple currently lists Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Norwegian and Swedish as supported primary tvOS languages. Users can still press and hold the Siri button on the remote when hands-free listening is unavailable or unwanted.
Apple says microphone data is processed inside protected Secure Exclaves separated from tvOS and apps. Siri requests may be handled on the device or by Private Cloud Compute.
The fourth-generation Siri Remote
The included Siri Remote keeps the aluminum body, touch-enabled clickpad and dedicated power, volume, mute, back, play and TV buttons. It charges through USB-C, but Apple does not include a USB-C cable or charger in the box.
The main addition is Find My. The remote can play a sound, and Precision Finding can guide a compatible iPhone toward it. Apple limits Precision Finding with this remote to iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e, on current software. Availability can also vary by region.
Find My support is available on the second-generation Siri Remote and later, but playing a sound is exclusive to the newest remote. Apple says the new remote is compatible with Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K generations and will be sold separately. It may therefore be possible to add some remote-finding functions to an older Apple TV without replacing the box.
Four-speaker HomePod surround sound
The new Apple TV 4K can create a four-speaker surround setup using HomePod mini 2 or second-generation full-size HomePods. Apple TV identifies speaker positions and automatically adjusts timing and levels for the room.
This setup has strict requirements. It needs the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K and four supported HomePods arranged as matching front and rear pairs. Buyers cannot combine arbitrary HomePod generations or use a single older HomePod as one channel in the new arrangement.
Four HomePod mini 2 speakers cost $796 before tax, bringing the combined hardware to $1,225 before tax. Buyers should compare that with soundbars and conventional surround systems. Our HomePod mini 2 Canada guide covers the speaker's requirements.
Smart-home hub features
Apple TV 4K works as an Apple Home hub, allowing remote control, automations and access to compatible HomeKit, Matter and Thread accessories. Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7 provide network options, while the built-in Thread radio can connect supported low-power devices.
With a compatible video doorbell, the television can show who is at the door and provide controls for supported accessories. HomeKit Secure Video can also generate activity descriptions and summarized notifications using Apple Intelligence.
Those camera features require setup through an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad and an eligible iCloud+ plan. Camera limits depend on the plan. Apple states that HomeKit Secure Video footage is end-to-end encrypted and is not accessible to Apple.
Smart-home compatibility should be checked accessory by accessory. The presence of Thread does not make every wireless accessory compatible.
Streaming, apps and Canadian content
Apple TV 4K runs apps from the tvOS App Store and supports services that offer Canadian tvOS applications. Subscription prices, channel lineups, live sports and blackouts are set by each provider and can differ from the United States.
Apple's announcement references Formula 1 availability in the United States, so Canadian buyers should not assume the same rights are included locally. Major League Soccer and Friday Night Baseball availability also depends on Apple's current Canadian service terms and any applicable subscription.
The box supports Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, photos and FaceTime. FaceTime uses Continuity Camera with a compatible iPhone or iPad rather than a built-in camera.
Television and connection requirements
An HDMI cable is required and sold separately. For 4K HDR, the cable, television or projector, receiver and content must all support the selected format. The Apple TV can control compatible television or receiver functions through HDMI-CEC or infrared, but the exact power and volume behaviour depends on the connected equipment.
Wi-Fi 7 is backward-compatible with older Wi-Fi networks, so a Wi-Fi 7 router is not required. Ethernet may provide a more predictable connection where wiring is available. Streaming quality still depends on the internet plan, local network congestion and service bitrate.
The Apple TV supports Bluetooth keyboards and compatible game controllers. It has no HDMI input or television tuner, so conventional programming requires another source or a provider app.
Should owners of an older Apple TV upgrade?
Owners of an Apple TV HD or first-generation Apple TV 4K gain the largest hardware change, including a substantially newer processor, current HDR support, more storage and newer wireless networking. App support and tvOS compatibility may also become a reason to replace older hardware over time.
Second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K owners should compare specific features. Siri AI is also supported on the second generation and later, while the newest Siri Remote can work with older boxes. The fourth-generation model is most distinct for its A19 performance, AV1 decoder, built-in hands-free microphones, Wi-Fi 7 and four-HomePod surround system.
At $429, upgrading solely for faster menus may not be economical. The new model is a clearer fit for buyers building an Apple Home system, using newer HomePods, playing tvOS games or wanting hands-free Siri and the latest remote in one package.
